First Licenses for Fantasy Sports Contests Issued

The Commission has approved the first licenses for fantasy sports contest operators, after being given the authority to regulate the contests by the Ohio General Assembly with the passage of House Bill 132 in 2018.

In addition to requiring fantasy sports contest operators to be licensed, House Bill 132 included a number of consumer protections that operators must comply with, including: providing responsible gaming information and a voluntary exclusion program; verifying the identity of fantasy contest players; ensuring prompt payment of winnings and that players funds are kept separate from operational funds; the methods by which highly-experienced players will be identified; and the processes for offering beginning‐player only contests.

Following a suitability investigation by the Commission that includes a review of an applicant’s regulatory history as well as a check of any criminal and/or civil actions, fantasy contest operator licenses were granted to:

  • Fantasy Golf’s OG, the Original GolfGame
  • StatHero
  • DraftKings
  • FanDuel
  • Yahoo Fantasy Sports
